Charlie Howard - struggling crime-writer by day, talented thief by night - has gone straight. But holing himself up in a crumbling palazzo in Venice to concentrate on his next novel hasn't got rid of the itch in his fingers. And to make matters worse, a striking Italian beauty has just broken into his apartment and made off with his most prized possession, leaving a puzzling calling card in its place.

It looks as though kicking the habit of a lifetime will be much more of a challenge than Charlie thought. Sneaking out into Venice's maze of murky canals, Charlie's attempts to tame a cat burglar embroil him in a plot that is far bigger and more explosive than he could ever have imagined.

The Good Thief Guide to Venice Good Thief Mysteries Book 4 Unabridged (Audible Audio Edition) Chris Ewan Simon Vance Audible Studios Books

"Never trust a crook. It's a simple lesson, but it's one worth bearing in mind." - Charlie Howard thinking about cheating yet another unsuspecting soul.

Charlie is an experienced thief who has been trying to give up a life of stealing for writing. He's a somewhat successful author of mystery books about, no surprise here, a thief. Unfortunately, for Charlie, he has just been burgled himself by a very lovely lady who leaped out of his window with the one thing Charlie needs the most...his muse.

"It's fair to say that most writers are superstitious. I've heard of authors who have to write with a favourite pen on a particular brand of writing paper, and others who can't begin a novel until they've completed some familiar ritual - like running a half-marathon, or clipping their toenails , or getting divorced. Me, I have two quirks that I'm aware of. I like to move to a new city when I start a book, and I always write with a framed first edition of THE MALTESE FALCON hanging above my desk."

So you see Charlie's dilemma. He can't write without the framed book to inspire him. He also has to find out where the lady took his book and steal it back. But where to look? So begins this humorous mystery set in the beautiful "Floating City" of Venice.

I probably should have started reading the first one in this four book series THE GOOD THIEF'S GUIDE TO AMSTERDAM, but I was hooked by the title, having visited Venice this past summer, and wanted to read about Charlie's wanderings through the streets and over the bridges of the city I fell in love with. I have just begun reading the first GOOD THIEF'S GUIDE to learn more about how Charlie became a thief and then a writer. Highly recommended 4 stars.

The Good Thief Guide to Venice Good Thief Mysteries Book 4 Unabridged (Audible Audio Edition) Chris Ewan Simon Vance Audible Studios Books Reviews

This is a fun romp through one thief's effort to go straight. A very entertaining mystery, though essentially fluff. I would recommend it for fun reading.
All these Good Theif Guides are very Entertaining. You get a nice tour of whichever city he's in and it's fun.
This whole series is great. Quirky with enough real live info to be very interesting. Can't wait for more from this author. Nice to see a few other character developments.
I loved this book! This is the first that I have read from this series, and I definitely plan on reading the rest. It is fast paced and fun. I would recommend it.
Wow, Chris once again wrote a story that kept me on the edge of my seat! He made the characters so vivid, Venice so real, and what a story teller! I can't wait to travel to...Berlin I think! Arrivederci Venice, Guten tag Berlin!
I've read or listened to this whole series, and LOVE IT. Great, fun, smart character who lives in a decidedly gray area. He's a thief who does try to do good things...Cary Grant-ish dude, in my mind. Simon Vance reads the audiobooks and he embodies the character to a "t" - he's a gentleman, a writer, and OK a thief too. But he does have a moral code, it just may be a tad different from the average citizen. Each book is set in a different city, and it's clear the author has traveled to each and done his research. If you haven't read any of these, they can be read/heard in any order, but the first (Amsterdam) does give you background on how Charlie ended up becoming a thief. Can't wait for the next one.
Charlie is a good thief but a bad experience in Vegas has sent him to Venice to write his detective stories. He's promised his agent, Victoria, to stay on the straight and narrow. Then he gets a visit by a beautiful burglar who has taken his first edition MALTESE FALCON. To get his book back, she sends him on a strange mission. Then all the troubles really begin.

The book is just plain fun to read. The writing is excellent, with the best descriptions of people, places and things that I've read in a while. The mystery intrigues with humor galore. This is the first one I've read in this series, though it is the fourth book. Will go back and read them all now. Listened to this in Audible, which added a lot to my enjoyment.
