Why do we choose to medicate ourselves with psychiatric drugs? Something like 20% of us do. Is it to feel better? To feel normal? To temper anxiety? To dash depression? Or to keep from bouncing between crushing lows and creative, exuberant highs? Banish those annoying voices? Sleep through the nightmares of our past? Or stop ourselves from doing whatever it is we are doing that is annoying the hell out of us and those we love? And how in the world did we develop the notion that a pill or potion could "fix" all these problems?
Reframing Mental Illness tells the story of how we have come to believe in a biomedical, brain-chemical-gone-amuck origin for an ever-expanding cornucopia of psychiatric and psychological disorders. It then offers options for getting off the psychiatric drug merry-go-round by reframing our current cause/solution perspective through increased self-awareness and a variety of empowering alternative viewpoints, techniques, and mindwork exercises inspired by such sources as NLP, EFT, quantum physics, and energy work.

This is great book, the first part is unbelievable, the history compression that was done was and is stellar. The thorough detailing of all the techniques that the author explains is an excellent starting point.I am a Certified NLP Master Practitioner by INLPTA and as one I have always believed that many of the mental conditions can be fixed with a thorough Parts Negotiation and Timeline Therapy. If there is no total remission there is always an improvement.
The problem are the psychiatric prescriptions side effects and unwillingness to drop the drugs. There are many drug addicts that love their condition because they love their addiction to the drugs that they get legally prescribed and paid by their respective insurance. Also there is a great deal of people that love their conditions because they do profit dearly from them.
Based on these premises, this book is not for everyone. It is for those who wants to get well!

Reframing Mental Illness Susan Thrasher 9781500667528 Books Reviews
this is a 'must read' for anyone with an interest in the history of the treatment of symptoms in the face of not knowing what is going on in a person. the first part is almost like reading a horror story! thank you for such thorough research, susan. your book will hopefully reach as many people as possible and will be a handbook and guideline forward for anyone who reads it
As a psychologist and a psychotherapist I thought there was not a lot I could learn about mental illness. Boy was I ever in for a surprise.
Susan Thrasher's book "Reframing Mental Illness" taught me so much about the ways that the drug companies write and rewrite the rules of the game. The book is well researched and referenced and is eminently readable.
This book makes the world of mental health easily understandable by the lay person and is detailed enough to satisfy the professional.
More importantly this book describes easy drug free interventions that do not involve a life time of dependency.
If you only read 1 book on mental illness, make sure it is this one. Highly recommended.
